Wei Li wins TNM golf championship

Wei Li posted 45 points to beat a field of 84 golfers and lift the TNM golf championship at Zomba Gymnkhana Club on 26th November 2011.

The champion underlined his class on back nine which helped him emerge the winner.

"It was a difficult championship. I did not start well on front nine but I promised to pick up myself and it worked. If God says this is your day, there is nothing anybody can do to stop it," he said.

 



 

Li also saluted TNM for supporting golf saying the company was helping the development of the sport in the country.

"Whenever, there is TNM just know that the turn out will be huge because it is like a PGA tournament in Malawi," he said.

Peter Tsamwa from Thyolo Golf Club finished second after posting 44 points while Mathews Mbewe ended on third position with 42 points.

In individual awards, Peter Somanje won the longest drive award on hole 11 while Mbewe won the nearest to the pin award on hole 18.

In ladies category, Doreen Mwenitete clinched the women championship while veteran golfer Lucy Ganiza won the longest drive award. Doreen Kavala won the nearest to the pin on hole 13.

TNM head of Southern Region Tom Kaponda said the event was successful.

"This has been a very successful and we are encouraged by the turnout," he said.

Gymkhana Club golf captain Willet Karonga also hailed golfers who came from Mzuzu, Blantyre, Thyolo and Nchalo golf clubs.

Meanwhile, TNM donated K75,000 to Gymkhana Club for the maintenance of the greens.
