Government has applauded mobile network firm TNM for continuing to sponsor the K60 million TNM Super League and urged soccer loving Malawians to patronise the company's business. Speaking in an interview after witnessing the grand launch of the 2011/12 TNM Super League season at Silver Stadium in Lilongwe, Youth Development and Sports Minister Lucious Kanyumba said government was pleased to see a Malawian company pumping lots of money into sports. "Since TNM started sponsoring the league five seasons ago, the company has pumped in more than K300 million into the league. This is a commendable achievement for both TNM and the Super League of Malawi. "By sponsoring the league, TNM has assisted government in its goal of developing football in Malawi. Through this sponsorship, TNM has helped in providing entertainment to the people of Malawi, raising standards of football at elite level and enhanced the performance of our national football team," observed Kanyumba, who was guest of honour at the launch. Super League of Malawi (Sulom) president Innocent Bottoman joined the Minister in applauding TNM, pledging the league's administering body would do its best to promote the TNM brand. "We thank soccer fans for turning up in their multitudes to witness the launch. This is a clear sign that we all appreciate the good gesture from TNM. As the league's administrators, we will put in measures to ensure the league is more exciting and free of incidents," said Bottoman. TNM's public relations and sponsorship manager Wilma Chalulu said the sponsors were equally overwhelmed by the response from fans. "We are encouraged by the huge turn out and as sponsors, we are looking forward to another exciting season. We are there as TNM because of customers and with this kind of response, we believe we are achieving our objective of developing football and giving back to the customers," said Chalulu. The launch was climaxed by a league match involving defending champions Escom United and their runners-up Silver Strikers. The champions proved their salt by beating the home side 3-1. Other activities that spiced up the launch included a trophy parade within the capital city, a live music show by award winning artist Lucious Banda, a performance by Malawi Police Band and a social football match involving journalists and TNM Socials. TNM Socials walloped the journalists 5-0. << Back |
