With a few days to go before the start of this season's TNM Super League, three stakeholders have agreed to establish a good and strong working relationship to make the league more thrilling and competitive. This was noted during the day-long workshop at Malawi Sun Hotel on 02 July 2011 where sponsors (TNM), Sulom officials and the media met to plan ahead of the kickoff. During the meeting, delegates contributed positively and constructively on what was required to make the league exciting to benefit stakeholders. Some of the issues that were highlighted included security, broadcasting rights and how to promote the TNM brand. Sulom president Innocent Botomani said they have taken note of various ideas which participants contributed during the workshop. "We will soon start a new chapter. We will do our best to implement what we have discussed. We hope from this moment our relationship with the sponsors and media will be strong and cordial to promote the league. We want fans to patronise Super League matches in large numbers at the same time we want to promote TNM products," he said. TNM Public Relations and Sponsorship Manager Wilma Chilulu said the meeting was important because it provided a forum on how to promote the elite league. "We have taken note of suggestions and recommendations and as sponsors we will respond positively to promote the league," she said. Earlier on, there were presentations aimed at equipping sports journalists with skills to promote the league and safeguard TNM sponsorship. The Daily Times Sports Editor Pilirani Kachinziri said it was important for sports journalists to know their role in promoting the league and TNM brand. "While the corporate world continues to pull out sponsorship of the country's football, TNM has stood firm to continue bankrolling the country elite league making it almost the only dependable sponsor, " he said. "It should be borne in mind that that even though one may argue that this is the company's social responsibility, no company is under obligation to provide sponsorship and they do so at their own benevolence." Malawi Broadcasting Corporation sports journalist Frank Kandu also highlighted the problems the media face when covering games while the Sports Editor for The Nation Michael Meya also suggested various things to make the relationship between the sponsors, administrators and the media to work. Sports Writers Association of Malawi (Swam) interim president Peter Kanjere was given chance to clear the misconception that had emerged following the establishment of the body. "The body has not excluded the electronic journalists as others think. We believe that we are all sports writers because television and radio sports journalists also write scripts. In the meantime, I can also confirm to you that 50 percent of those that are in the interim committee are coming from electronic media, "he said. << Back |
