By Janet Nsanja, The Daily Times

Briefing journalists on the development at tnm's head office in Livingstone Towers, Blantyre, the company's chief technical officer David Chetty said the upgrading process is aimed at giving quality service to the customer.

He said the upgrade would also allow tnm to provide enhanced value added services, new coverage areas and more capacity, among the many benefits.

"In the first half of this year we have achieved many goals including the improvement of international voice quality since we have our own V-SAT, a new equipment room at Livingstone Towers and capacity upgrade of 27 sites across the country," said Chetty.
He added that there will be integration of the recently installed New Generation Home Location Register (NGHLR) which stores all subscriber information scheduled for this Sunday, June 15,2008.

"As part of the process in upgrading the tnm network, there will be minor disruptions. We, therefore, request all subscribers to please switch their phones off and on the morning of June 15," said Chetty.

According to Chetty, the network upgrade will allow tnm to provide such services as pre-paid roaming, voice mail, introduction of multimedia messages and WAP services, upgrading of the short message service (SMS) and USSD plus introduction of dan services like the GPRS and EDGE.
In his remarks, tnm chief executive officer Werner Schrijver said the company is keen to deliver in such areas as customer value, customer service and registering consistent and predictable growth.

"In line with our brand promise of ' always with you ' we want to enable people and businesses to realise their full potential. In so doing our mobile services will contribute in the growth and development of the Malawi economy," he said.

tnm was launched on December 15,1995 as the country's first mobile phone network operator trading as Telekom Networks Malawi Limited (tnm) under a joint venture partnership between the Malawi Government through the Malawi Telecommunications Limited (MTL) which owned 40 percent stakes in the company and Telekom Malaysia which held 60 percent.

In April 2007 Telekom Malaysia pulled out from tnm as part of its strategy to concentrate on investments closer to its homeland. It was then that the company rebranded to tnm after being taken over by indigenous Malawian investors trading as MTL Mobile, a wholly Malawian owned firm bought the 60 percent shares. MTL Mobile investors comprise Press Corporation Limited (PCL), Old Mutual pic and Livingstone Investments owned by First Merchant Bank Limited.

Privatised fixed phone network operator MTL, 80 percent owned by a consortium led by PCL owns the remaining 40 percent in tnm.
