tnm shares lead stock exchange market - 06/November/2008

Malawi’s top mobile company tnm has listed on local stock exchange market weeks after the public sale of its shares priced at K2.00 Initial Public Offer (IPO).

During the listing the price of the shares rose by 75 percent to K3.50 thereby leading the market as the most sought after.

In all, 34,000 people bought the shares and the company raised K2.4billion through the trading.
On the first day of the stock market trading 146milllion shares, changed hands vindicating that the company is currently leading the market in terms of attractiveness.

Few weeks ago the Initial Public Offer of 1.29 billion shares was over subscribed with 305 percent.
Stock Exchange Operations Director John Kamanga said tnm shares gained total of 362.84 points from to 5, 958.88 adding up to 6,323.71 points. He said tnm’s presence has consequently increased the number of counters (companies) on the local bourse to 15.

MSE board chairman Khrishna Savjan praised tnm for listing on the stock market saying the development meant Malawi’s capital market has come of age and that people are taking interest to save money through the purchasing of shares. At 34,000 holders tnm has surpassed other top companies including NBS bank with 11,000 and Malawi Property Investment Company (MPICO) at 13, 000.

In an interview tnm executive board member Pius Mulipa said the sale has been successful as it has enabled the company to go closer to its public. He said the K2.4 billion would enable them enhance their services and most probably hasten the upgrading process of their machines.
“We are now a public company and there are so many rules of running a public company particularly with the demands from our share holders as well as customers.

“More importantly the listing has empowered us to upgrade our system even faster,” he said.
tnm ‘s  lead advisor on Stock Exchange Rob Stangroom from Securities Africa described the share pricing rise as a result of growth of the confidence people have in tnm shares.

“I was the first person to establish stock market in the country in 1996; we started with small number of companies now we have 15.

“The listing of tnm is special because of the observed scramble for the shares. It is evident that people have confidence in the tnm shares but above that, the presence of many counters on the market means investors now have a choice where to go,” he said.

Simon Msefula MSE Chief Executive said tnm’s listing was historical going by the record of being over subscribed to the tune of 305 percent.

He said: “There is every indication that the tnm prices gain more points and go up.”

tnm Chief Executive Werner Schrivjer said the listed brought excitement on the part tnm as a company. He said their goal is advance their services to the public and improve accessibility particularly the coming year 2009.

Announcing results of the IPO to journalists in Blantyre yesterday, tnm chief executive officer Werner Schrijver said tnm has managed to raise the K2.43 billion as overall subscription hit K7.8 billion.
He said tnm board members have since met to decide on the allotment of the shares.

"We have finalised the allotment of the shares and we are pleased to announce the preferential allotment was for tnm employees and minority shareholders. However, all other applicants will receive a minimum shares which is 10,000 shares and around 22 percent of the remainder of the shares applied for," announced Scnrijver

He said with allotment now finalised the new tnm shareholders should expect to have their share certificates and refunds on November 3 this year "The support for tnm IPO has been unprecedented and comes from diverse sectors of the Malawian economy. We are happy that 100 percent of the applicants were Malawian," he said.

Schrijver said the proceeds of the IPO will be a solid base to facilitate growth such as network expansion, new products and 3G mobile service. tnm indicated during the briefing that shareholders should smile as they have first dividend this year in December although to be paid in January 2009.

Best things yet to come- 21/October/2008
By Jacob Nankhonya, The Daily Times Newspaper

Mobile telecommunications company, tnm, says best things in the telecommunications industry are yet to come.

Speaking in Lilongwe during a tnm monthly mug golf tournament, Regional Sales Manager for Central and Northern regions Richard Chinula, said they would bring more good things in the telecommunications industry.

He said most of the things they are planning have never been seen in the country's telecommunications industry.

"Since tnm embarked on network expansion programme, work has never slackened and people should be on the look out for exciting products from us. In fact, in a few weeks from now, we are launching another new product, which I am not going to disclose now," said Chinula.

According to Chinula, tnm commissioned 60 new network sites by July this year in its first phase of network expansion, which is threefold. "The programme is in three phases and at the end of this programme, we want to have 100 new network sites," said Chinula.

Chinula also said people now have full confidence in tnm as shown by how they have scrambled for its shares during the initial public offer (IPO).

tnm floats 1 billion shares and launces new website- 24/September/2008
By Caroline Kandiero & Jonah Pankuku, The Daily Times Newspaper

tnm Limited on October 2nd launched its Initial Public Offer (IPO) in Blantyre whereby they will put to offer over 1 billion shares to the public from 6th October.

The company, which is the first telecommunications firm to list on the Malawi Stock Exchange (MSB) intends to raise up to MK2.5 billion. According to tnm Chairman Mathews Chikaonda, there is appetite from people to invest in tnm and that the company has massive expansion projects. "There are various ways where a company can raise money and as a growing company we have massive expansion projects that need funding, so instead of borrowing from the banks we can also go to the capital market to raise money," said Chikaonda.

He further said companies can go to the stock market to raise money for the general public who become shareholders and in return are empowered by the dividends they receive. Chikaonda also said the listing of tnm is also a way of improving the country's economy as companies are able to rely on the domestic market for capital and other projects in the private sector. "Previously it was government through the privatisation going to the stock market and now it is the private sector companies going to the market and this is good for us. Before we also used to go outside the country to borrow money and now we are saying, internally we can do it and we are doing it," said Chikaonda. He also said since the launch of the IPO website (www.tnminvestor.com) on Thursday morning, there has rteen a tremendous international interest on tnm, and that individuals from more than 35 countries had already visited the page.

MSB's Chairman Krishna Savjani said in for the past years the primary objective for the offers had been for empowerment and privatisation. "This year we have seen offers that intend to realise capital listing on the market, this shows the dynamism and activity the market can offer," said Savjani. He also said companies should realise that it is cheaper to go on the market than to borrow from the banks, he then encouraged stock brokers to advice companies properly so that they list on the market.

On another note the company introduced a new network site at Chipoka in Salima that will cover a radius terrain of 20 km where there is a clear line. The company's Communications Marketing Manager, Sobhuza Ngwenya said in an interview on Friday, they decided to launch the flew network coverage realizing that 85 percent of the country's population is in the rural area and needed to reach them.

Ngwenya added that was also in line with Malawi's Growth and Development Strategy in ensuring that communication was smooth to enhance developmental projects in rural areas - He further said the company was expected to mount 85 new network transmitters in the country, currently tnm has mounted over 60 new network transmitters in the country and it plans to launch 106 new network sites this year.
